Almost 1 million non-switchers could pay-off Christmas debts by changing energy supplier
Nearly 1 million (900,000) people who’ve never switched energy supplier could cover the cost of their Christmas borrowing by changing to a better deal.
New analysis from Citizens Advice shows that around 3.2 million people in Britain borrowed up to £150 to cover the cost of Christmas in 2018, almost 1 million of whom have never switched supplier.
Even with the introduction of the price cap earlier this year, people could still save over £150 by switching supplier - and potentially pay off their Christmas bills.
With credit card bills starting to land, people across Britain are being encouraged to check, switch and save to help with managing their finances.
Gillian Guy, Chief Executive of Citizens Advice, said:
“Switching energy supplier or tariff is often the easiest way to make big savings on your bills. Even with the price cap now in place it’s important to check that you’re getting the best deal.
“As well as switching, it’s important that people know that extra grants and benefits may be available to them. These can help take the pressure off their finances and support them to make their homes more energy efficient.”
Claire Perry, Energy and Clean Growth Minister, said:
“Check your bills, use the price comparison tool by Citizens Advice to see if you can get a better deal and switch suppliers and save money. And of course, even if you don’t switch, you will now be protected from rip-off tariffs thanks to this Government’s energy price cap.”

Most suppliers offer a discount for paying your bill by direct debit.
You may also get discounts for receiving bills online. This cuts down on paper, so is cheaper for the supplier and better for the environment.
Check you are getting all the benefits and help you are entitled to.
Switch
Many people stay on the same tariff or with the same energy supplier for years, without realising they could be getting a better deal elsewhere. By switching tariffs or suppliers, you could save over £150 on your fuel bill.
Save
The best way to pay less for your fuel is simply to save energy around your home.
Insulation your home - approximately a third of heat is lost through the walls of your home, and a quarter through the roof.
There are also lots of small things you can do to waste less energy or lower costs around the home, such as turning off lights and switching appliances off at the wall.
